History

Since the beginning of the 21st century, contact in the field of research and science has been maintained at university level through communication between scientists at TU Clausthal and Sichuan University. The contact is characterized by an exchange of information about the research culture and the communication of research topics, which has led to a relationship of understanding and trust. Communication now takes place via several channels. This helps to protect the thread of conversation from being severed.

Since the signing of the "International Cooperation for Teaching and Research" agreement in 2004, Sichuan University and TU Clausthal have intensified their cooperation in almost all areas, focusing on the joint supervision of doctoral students, a "2+2 Bachelor's Program in Geoenvironmental Engineering" with a double degree, as well as numerous reciprocal visits.

In September 2007, Prof. Dr. Michael Z. Hou and Prof. Dr. Xie Heping successfully held the Chinese-German workshop on "Relevant aspects of the underground storage ofCO2 and natural gas" in Goslar with the financial support of the Chinese-German Center for the Promotion of Science.

Supported by the Federal State of Lower Saxony and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, TU Clausthal and Sichuan University acted as organizers and coordinated a joint declaration by a total of 12 universities and research institutes in October 2008. The declaration emphasizes the interest in Chinese-German cooperation in the energy sector, which is to be expanded into long-term research alliances.

This resulted in two joint research projects:

2007-2010:

International key cooperation project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) on "Design of gas and oil storage cavern in rock salt and optimization of operating parameters of gas and oil"

2008-2010:

International key cooperation project of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology on "Basic research onCO2 sequestration in rock salt caverns"

Based on the positive experience of Sino-German cooperation, the plan to develop a Sino-German cooperation group on "Underground storage of CO2 and energy" was established. This plan was presented to the Chinese-German Center for Economic Development in Beijing. After a positive assessment by the two national science organizations, the German Research Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the cooperation group was funded by the Sino-German Center for Economic Development for a period of three years.
